Canned biscuits in the air fryer are great, don't get me wrong. They cook super fast and make for really delicious air fryer donuts. BUT today I'm going to show you just how easy it is to make biscuits that are much better...and only 4 ingredients.
Just about anybody could make this super simple recipe! And it won't be long until you're whipping them up at least once a week!
Ingredients in Easy Buttermilk Biscuits
Salted Butter - I think salted butter just works better in this recipe. You can go with unsalted, but you'll want to up the salt by 1/4 of a teaspoon.
Self-Rising Flour - This is what makes the biscuits. It's a great ingredient to have on hand for lots of recipes from pancakes to air fryer scones. Super convenient!
Salt - Regular table salt is just fine, though I've been enjoying sea salt more lately.
Buttermilk - You can substitute in whole milk if you don't have buttermilk, but that classic buttermilk flavor is just unbeatable!
It really is that simple.
Preheat the air fryer to 320° F. Cut parchment paper to fit the air fryer basket. Place butter in the freezer 10 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
Grate the almost frozen butter into the bowl and use a wooden spoon to evenly distribute it. Add the buttermilk and stir until a soft dough forms.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently press and flatten the dough until mostly smooth and uniform. Gently roll into an 8 inch by 10 inch rectangle. Use a sharp knife, dusted in flour to cut the dough into eight even squares, or use a biscuit cutter for uniform circles.
Place the biscuits on parchment paper in the air fryer basket, working in batches as necessary, and cook for 15 minutes until golden bowl on the top and the edges feel firm to the touch. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
Don't have self-rising flour?
Not a problem! Self rising flour can easily be made by combining 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
So for this recipe that would be 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Can you make these 4 ingredient biscuits in the oven?
Definitely! Make the recipe exactly the same, but place the biscuits on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake them in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
You can store these air fryer biscuits in an airtight container on the counter for up to two days, or up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Top tips for making biscuits in the air fryer
You'll definitely want to make this recipe using cold butter. Whenever I make air fryer biscuits, or just about anything that I want to turn out super duper flaky, I start off by throwing the butter in the freezer for at least 10 minutes...usually longer.
The cold butter makes for little pockets of air that gives the biscuits rise. If you use warm or melted butter, you're more likely to end up with dense, chewy biscuits.
When it's time to incorporate the butter into the batter, you can use a simple cheese grater to get it all worked in. This is my favorite method for no fail flaky buttermilk biscuits.

- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup butter milk
